It was a disgrace for Lama Lhanangpa:(

Ngyoe Gelwa Lhanangpa after visiting Bhutan as the earliest Buddhist master was in fact the figure who brought the light in the country of dark. How ever in the present day many although without true eye of the history people keep on disgracing his contribution for the country by alleging him as the one that had disputed with Phajo. It was indeed a real prejudice and disgrace for this great saint who opened the gate of Bhutan's transformation from darkness for the first time.
It was true that Phajo faced resistance from other religious sects in which one of them was the Lhapa, but Lhapa was the sub-sect of Drigung kagyue found by Lhanangpa that does not mean Lhapa is the Lhanangpa. There are authors who deliberately point at Lhanangpa making him the 'bad man' of the time. “(Lhanangpa sent a letter to Phajo saying, "You cannot stay in this country without my permission. You should either look after the monastery of Jathel Dzong or serve as a stable-keeper. Else you will lose your life".)” this is from an article of Phajo's biography posted in a web called World Lingo by some authors. It is not even known from where that particular quote is being picked up. Lhanangpa was also known as Lhanangpa Sangay Rinchen, and some authors have made clear their intention of disgracing mentioning his name as the one who confronted the young Phajo.
To my surprise Lhanangpa was died in the year when Phajo came to Bhutan. Lhanangpa was born in 1164 and has died in the year 1224 when Phajo just turned for Bhutan. It can be known if we go though better sources and do some research and analysis rather than just being a tongue follower.
The current Yangpi lopen in a BBS live interview was even heard saying that Nyoe Lhanangpa is the one who used the people of Sha, wang and Pa for his own good, while his teaching have benefitted the people and became his subject by which for centuries the Lhapa tradition lasted for centuries until it lost to Drukpa kagyue at the later age of Phajo. The Lhapa kaguye has come to Bhutan some time in 1214-15 before he built the Do-Nyoen Dzong in 1216 and until his death his had followers in Bhutan as well as in Tibet.
There fore although the story doesn't end here we need to get to the deep before we just go by the words without any knowledge. Because taking up with just a little knowledge is dangerous that it undermines the real and true fact for future generations.
This is to open the door for commands and other analysis to get ourselves deep till the truth. Any command is well come.

  1. that's a good one, one has to understand the dispute was for political dominance than religious dominance, all the saints that came to Bhutan had patrons in Bhutan and they had to make sure that they enjoyed the favor of their patrons thus we can see that the opposition against the arrival and phajo and later against Zhabdrung was of political motive than religious....be it lhapa.drukpa.drigung.kathog, chazampa....all are but sub sects that has come down from a long line of saints starting from Dorje chang ( Vajradhara till Milarepa and so on...one cannot just play one saint against the other to construct history ( history is not just about one man being the hero and the other a villain), for , each saint has contributed immensely for spread of dharma and one has to respect that...we cannot ignore the fact that it was Gyalwa Lhananpga who brought the Dzong system in Bhutan for the first time and Zhadrung Rinpoche later gave it a dual purpose...we certainly need to get our facts correct before we quote a person...fabricated facts can manipulate history and make it loose its worth...
